Atlona AT-HDAIR PC to Computer Monitor/HDTV Wireless Adapter Review

Atlona AT-HDAIR PC to Computer Monitor/HDTV Wireless Adapter
Average Reviews:

This is the second time I bought this wireless TV adapter. This Atlona one was only $129.95 from Electronics-depot. It is the same gadget as one called Warpia except the plastic case is white. It worked great streaming laptop to TV downstairs so I bought it for my second TV upstairs. The video can be choppy if used with Atom based netbook, but it works flawlessly with the core 2 duo based HP notebook. It uses the processor horsepower for the video driver so the comp. must be strong enough to handle it. As long as it is used with the strong computer the video and audio will stream nicely to the TV. Even high def movies.

Griffin iTrip NA22044 Auto HandsFree Review

Griffin iTrip NA22044 Auto HandsFree
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll save you time. TL;DR - Don't even think about it.
I bought this device on a trip. A surprise road trip, returning to the Rocky Mountains, from the east coast. As such, I was hoping to find something good - anything good. The $50 I paid for it was FAR more than I'd wanted, but I wouldn't pay $15 for it, new-in-box with a three year warranty. I exchanged it twice before deciding it was just a horrible build.
1) This device has terrible FM range, and is very noisy. If I so much as moved my arm, the stereo wouldn't pick up the 'station' at times.
2) The quality of the audio is terrible. My good transmitter - the one at my destination - actually transmits bass. Shocking, I know, but this thing doesn't even try.
3) Hopefully you don't want to actually charge a phone with it. It seems to have some form of 'intelligent sensing' based on load, to determine if it should be on or not. For some reason I can't determine, 'red' is "phone unplugged" and 'yellow/orange' is "phone charging" - and 'green' is meant to be "phone plugged in and charged" but all I get is an hour of "orange" and then "strobing random colors" while it power-surges my phone on/off/on/off/on/off ad nauseum.. Removing the device from my vehicle's socket, it's HOT. Like, "why hasn't this melted yet" hot - using the same USB-to-phone cable I use at home, and am using as I type this - with the same phone. (For reference, no, the load of my phone is not too high - my home charger outputs 750mA, and my laptop outputs 250mA, and neither has complained!) Why? It uses a LINEAR voltage regulator. If you don't know what that is, pretend to be shocked and disgusted by it. You should be.
4) Why in the world does only one speaker actually put out sound..? Even with it in Mono mode. (Granted, only the first two units did this, but still!)
5) Who makes an AUTOMOTIVE device without a "hold" or a "lock"? Yes, I carefully picked 98.4 as my station, as it was the only one that would work for more than three minutes without disappearing randomly - even "blank" local frequencies. Yes, I wanted it to stay there, even if it bounces off my leg during a turn. No, I did not get my wish.
6) Straight out of the box, the first one had a broken support on the microphone clip. Not that I care, I didn't want a mic/hands-free, but it still bears mentioning.
This device was not worth the electricity it took for me to type up the review, nor my frustration, fuel to pick it up and return it repeatedly, the packaging it was hiding like a time-leech within, even the brain cells that died off during my contemplation of how to handle this situation.
Thank you Griffin. I literally will never purchase another product from your company. You've shown me that you can overprice even the most worthless of devices, and skimp upon their build in literally every possible aspect.

Easy install if you are a little bit mechanically/electrically inclined. Took me 45 minutes to mount and wire it, but i didn't have to remove my headliner, so some installs may be a bit more tricky. Stereo shop wanted $400 for install, so i'm glad i did it myself. As for the quality, it is simple in design, but the video looks great. I use my car stereo speakers, so i haven't tried out the IR feature for headphones, but i plan on getting a set of headphones in the near future. Keep in mind this is not a DVD player, only a monitor. I have an in dash DVD player with video output to this screen. For the price of this unit, it gets all 5 stars.

Yamaha YIT-W10 - iPod wireless audio delivery system transmitter Review

Yamaha YIT-W10 - iPod wireless audio delivery system transmitter
Average Reviews:

Overall I would give the dock 4 ot of 5 stars. The dock is easy to connect to your Yamaha receiver and comes with ample cable to position the dock wherever you would like. The convenience of being able to use your Ipod for playing music is great. The clarity and sound greatly surpasses that of the radio. My only disappointment is that the remote on the Yamaha receiver does not properly control the functions of the dock/ Ipod. Most functions work, except for the most impostant, the skip/ next song. Pressing the next song button on the remote of my RX467 receiver occasionally works (once out of every 50 tries), though is virtually inoperable. I have tried new batteries in the remote, repositioning the dock and receiver to make sure there are no obstructions, though nothing works. It is still worth the money just because of the sound quality and convenience. Resolution of my one issue would make this a 5-star rating.

XO Vision GX1572B 15-Inch Overhead LCD Monitor with DVD Player,IR and FM Transmitter Review

XO Vision GX1572B 15-Inch Overhead LCD Monitor with DVD Player,IR and FM Transmitter
Average Reviews:

The biggest challenge to a roof mount anything is the mounting - perhaps for the more advanced do-it-yourselfer, I had to go buy slightly longer, wider head 4mm mounting screws because the screw head on the provided bolts was too close to the hole size. Setting that difficulty aside because it will be the same regardless what you install, here is my review of the XO Vision GX1572B.
The unit came in a retail box packed inside a shipping box. Initially, the unit felt lightweight but I can understand you don't want anything too heavy hanging from your ceiling. Made in Hong Kong. I could not find any manual online.
There is a manual that comes with it. Some translation problems here and there but overall not too bad. Only strange thing is that it recommends you eject the DVD disc before cutting power to the unit or it could damage the disc. We followed that advie so, but forgot once or twice. No damage. It will remember where you were, if you put that same DVD back in before playing something else.
I tested the unit before mounting. It played several Zone 1 (North America) DVDs. It did not play some Star Wars DVDs I had which, when I looked, had an "A" instead of a "1" in the little square on the DVD case. Don't know why my home DVD plays them but this unit does not. However everything else (with the zone "1" mark) was fine.
There is no door over the DVD slot but rather a "brush" to keep stuff out. Seems strange, but one less moving part I guess...
Picture is bright enough. Infrared works fine for wireless headphones. If the sun is very bright it can interfere (this was rare) but pulling the drapes took care of that.
The FM transmitter works fine in case you don't want to use headphones. Just tune to 87.5 (I think that was it). I did not see any menu option to change that frequency.
The DVD drive itself sounds like it is struggling to pull the disc in or push it out. But we took a long trip where this was used at least 2 dozen times with no sign of fail, so I guess that's OK.
Biggest plus was the price for that size screen with a self contained unit. Just get 12 volts to your mount & no other cables are needed. It does have RCA input and output for audio and video in case you want to put a different source through it or if you want to run the output through an amp etc.
I give 4 stars instead of 5 only because of the things I have listed that seem a bit odd, but I have to say the unit did do as was advertised.

Philips SA32 4 GB Flash Video MP3 Player with FM Radio and 1.8-Inch Color Screen (Black) Review

Philips SA32 4 GB Flash Video MP3 Player with FM Radio and 1.8-Inch Color Screen (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, bear in mind that I got this player for $30 in Staples (May 09) so that sweetened the deal for me. And also, I am looking to get a larger unit in the future.
Pros:
1- Nice size player. Small and fits in your hand and pocket.

2- Very responsive when I connect it to my PC.
3- Very fast transfers of files.
4- Good video conversion software. But it converts the files only to an SMV format. Nothing else plays on the unit but .smv. Not mp4 or 3gp. But the software produces a nice product. The video is crisp. Surprisingly so for such a small screen (1.8 inch). I have another mp3 video player made by another company and their conversion software creates a 3gp that is mono and scratchy sounding . But this one converts the avi or wmv in stereo with a decent sound. But that also means the file size is larger.

5- Customer care, so far, has been great.
6- You can create folders for your audio and video files aka playlists. That was a big pro for me. (see below for instructions)
Cons:
1- Not crazy about the ear buds. Large. Kind of triangular shaped so they don't fit comfortably in your ear which also means the sound suffers because of it. Also, the sound only comes out of half the bud, not the entire bud. ??? Anyhow, for now, I press them in when a good part of the song comes around so I can hear it better. (New ear buds are on the horizon for me.)
2- I would have liked a bit more in the equalizer dept. You have preset equalizers (Jazz, Rock, Classical, Rap etc) but they don't sound great. But there also is a "custom" equalizer so you can fiddle around with that but I still haven't gotten a setting I'm happy with.
3- Very small menus and I can't read the song information without glasses.
4- Also no expandable slot so you can't add a memory card to expand storage.
5- Had a problem when watching videos initially. Whenever I would fast forward or pause the video the picture and sound would go off sync. I called custom care and they told me to reset the unit. There is a reset button and, after pressing it with a paper clip end, it fixed the problem. Also I think I did a firmware update for that too. Not sure. But all is working fine now.
How to make your own playlist:
For anyone who also hates Windows Media Player for making playlists, here's how I created my own. Create folders for audio and/or video files on your hard drive and then put your audio and video files in them. Then go to "My Computer" and copy and paste the folders into the "Playlists" folder on the Philips sa32 unit.
Then, to access these folders, when you put your player on, rather than going to the "Music" folder where everything is all jumbled together (individual songs, speech files, album tracks etc), go to the "Folder View" folder and then scroll down to "Playlists" and inside that folder there will be the folders you created with your songs and your videos in them.

New Potato TuneLink Auto Bluetooth Car Audio Interface for iPhone and iPod Touch Review

New Potato TuneLink Auto Bluetooth Car Audio Interface for iPhone and iPod Touch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product gives me a high quality audio connection between my iPhone 3GS and Mazda3 factory stereo. It pairs easily from the first time and then I do not need to do anything to re-pair it. On short rides, I do not even take the phone out of my pocket - as soon as I start the engine, in few seconds music just starts playing where it stopped last time. Of course I use AUX connection to my stereo to avoid any potential static in the city - but I tried FM for a couple of days as well and it's very, very decent, volume is not much different from radio stations, and very clear sound if you take care to choose an empty frequency - as you should anyway. Also, I set FM Volume to LOW for most clear sound. I can listen to Alan Parson's and Pink Floyd over FM just fine, to my surprise. Dynamic range and frequency response seem to be excellent.(this section of review is updated after weekend testing). I had other FM transmitters before and the sound never was that clear.
So I'm keeping it no questions; and it offers sharing the connection with other people in my car - kids love that.
so, to be short, I am done with my car audio upgrades. Tunelink is not cheap but it's MUCH cheaper than to buy and install aftermarket ipod-enabled or bluetooth stereo; besides, it's portable. Oh yes, it charges the phone too, and even the cable is included.
Negatives? hmmm... well, it requires having an iPhone or touch.. though I've heard they have Droid version now.

Griffin WindowSeat Windshield car mount for iPhone 3G with iPod touch 1G Adapter and Auxiliary Audio Cable Review

Griffin WindowSeat Windshield car mount for iPhone 3G with iPod touch 1G Adapter and Auxiliary Audio Cable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product works exactly as advertised. In fact, based on what I had read in the other reviews I would actually say that it works better than advertised. The suction cup works so well that the only thing I can figure is that the person that had problems with it did not understand how it worked. It is not the standard type of suction cup where you simply press it against the windshield and hope it holds. This suction cup works by placing it against the windshield and then turning the knob counterclockwise in order to pull the center portion away from the windshield. As it does this it creates a vacuum seal that so tight that you are more likely to dislodge the windshield than you are to remove this device from it.
The iPhone fits perfectly into the holder and the aux cable is nice and thin. I actually used the phone in this setup when I wanted to have a conference call and the other person's voice coming out of the car stereo worked great for that purpose.
The only caveat I would list is that if your car has a long sloping windshield you may find the extension not quite long enough to bring the phone within reach. You may be able to compensate for this by mounting it up higher. I drive a Jeep Wrangler and it has a pretty vertical windshield so I don't have this problem.

I'm an electrical engineer by training, and have spent a lot of time trying all combinations of connections, frequencies, and installations with multiple radios. I'm not an audio aficionado and didn't really expect a "stereo cabinet" level of audio quality.
But in my opinion this has been designed to give the absolute minimum level of quality/cost and still be called a FM modulator..It is so distorted that I would rather listen to my ipod through a 0.5 inch portable speaker than use this thing. I can make out the words of the music most of the time but it's a real strain -- so I guess it does work!!! but that's about all I can say about the quality of this product.

Average Reviews:

This new Griffin AirClick remote works well, similar to the previous design which plugged into the top of the iPod. The problem with this one is that the bottom-mounted design uses up the iPod's dock connector, so no way to connect external power or car audio (except by the headphone jack.) AirClick needs to add a pass-through dock connector on the bottom of this new AirClick.

The Griffin Technology 9502-CLK30 AirClick RF Remote Control with Dock Connector for iPod lets you hook up your iPod to your sound system and wander through the house while in full control of your tunes. With it, you can pause your iPod while you answer the door, then crank it back up without even going back in the room. The AirClick uses RF signals that travel through walls for control anywhere in your home or outside, up to 60 feet away from your iPod. The remote's five buttons control play/pause, next track, previous track, and volume up and down. A hold switch on the side of the AirClick prevents the accidental disturbance of your musical nirvana, while a clip equipped with Velcro straps enables convenient attachment to your arm, steering wheel, or bike frame.

Sony Walkman NWZE345BLK 16 GB Video MP3 Player (Black) Review

Sony Walkman NWZE345BLK 16 GB Video MP3 Player (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
[Edit: Upgrade from 3.5 to 4.4 stars; see below]
After my poor experience with the Phillips GoGear mp3 player (reviewed here last week), I thought I'd see what Sony can do with an mp3 player.
I bought their first (excellent) FM walkman in 1980 but haven't used one of their portables since. I am in general a Sony fan, and my 1986 Trinitron is still running like new. Gotta love that kind of quality! But do they still have it?
First, the good:
-Excellent battery life: 30 hours for music, and it does get close to that if you don't do much scrolling. Nice.

-Lots of gigs for a c-note: about 6 bucks per gig, once you realize that it's only 14.4 gb. I hate the way companies do that, btw. Don't tell me I'm getting 16 gigs and then give me ten percent less. Be honest! Stuff like that loses customers, savvy ones at least.
-Good sound...but with that traditional Sony eq curve: very flat. I've had a few Sony receivers and cd players and tape decks over the years, and they are all very flat across the ranges. This makes for nice tight bass and decent mids, but the top end is always a little compressed and lacks shimmer and overtones. Still, a solid tone, not tinny.
And seeing as most users choose mp3 files at either 128kbps or 192kbps (I'd recommend the latter if you play this through a car or other decent full-range stereo), there's plenty of compression already, so no huge loss. Using 320kbps or wav files, which this unit does support, will result however in some noticeable loss of shimmer and breathing room for the high frequencies.
-You can use folders, saves a lot of scrolling time. Put jazz, metal, etc into their own folders. Any smart mp3 player does this.
-***Please note!***Nice, simple drag and drop of files right out of the box, with no need to install the software. Just plug the Walkman into your usb and wait for it to show up on your computer as "Walkman". Do a few clicks and you're in the "music" folder; now drag and drop your files, all at once or one at a time. Presto! That's sweetness, because almost every problem I've had with mp3 players stems from badly written software, and avoiding the need for it altogether is preferable. If you can avoid installing your included software for any player, do it; it only causes hassles in the long run unless you need a certain feature. Drag and drop is where it's at: quick, simple, efficient. And no adware etc installed surreptitiously by the software cd, a newly common scam.
PS I prefer to make the folders first as opposed to using the WMP sync feature; it has glitches, while simple folder drag and drop never has for me.
-Gets good and loud. Helps with certain headphones. Sounds good on my Koss PortaPros and great on my AKG K701s. The phones that come with this are cheese, as usual. Buds will never compare to real cans.
-Excellent for running, my main use for mp3 players. It hasn't skipped on me once and can take all sorts of shaking and bouncing. Very nice.
-Very thin, light, sleek. Takes up almost no space in any pocket, purse, etc.
-A strange design touch that I haven't seen anyone mention, but which struck me right off: the control buttons on the front panel are shaped almost precisely like Mickey Mouse's head! This can't be coincidence; surely someone in design did this on purpose. So is Sony in bed with the Mouse, or what's up? In any case, sometimes I see it and hear Mickey's estrogenic squeal in my inner ear saying, "Pluto! Punch me in the nose and let's get this party started!"
-Along with the essential external volume buttons, there's a manual lock switch on the side of the unit. Very useful to not have to scroll to make this go on and off. A good design feature that all mp3 players should have. You might want to use this when it's off and in your pocket, as the unit turns on with only minor presssure on the front panel button...but that leads to:

-Another major plus, this unit starts playing exactly where the last tune you were playing stopped, in about a half second after the button is touched. Some players take ten seconds. This baby rips right into the music in a flash (literally; flash drive players have so many advantages). Excellent.
But, the bad:
-the screen is waaay thin; it's already covered with scratches after only a few days in my empty pocket. Not good. I don't care about the aesthetics, but do need to see the screen!
-to ff or rewind quickly, you must first pause the track: took me a while to figure this out. Not a big con, but could have been been done without needing to pause.
-There's a bar showing how long the tune is but no way to see time remaining, a very useful bit of data. Until a minute or so is gone, it's hard to estimate song length via the bar, and one must hit the option button (Mickey's right ear) and then scroll down to "detailed information" to get the exact song length; too much hassle for a feature that's standard on most mp3 players. Not a big issue, but an oversight worth correcting.
-and the one thing that will make me return this item next week: you can't delete songs or files from the player. You must first hook it up to a computer! Terrible design. My years-old Muvo deletes on the fly, as do my Dell DJ and other players. This is a huge mistake: with 4,000 songs, how can I remember all the ones I need to dump? Very major flaw, and a deal breaker for me.
But, for those who only transfer stuff they already know and love, this is a pretty darn decent player. I don't know who wants to watch movies or vids on a thumbnail-sized screen, but as a music player, this offers good sound and plenty of storage for a good price.
At this rate we'll get a terabyte for a c-note within a couple years.
Can't wait! Then we can put everything on in lossless FLAC files, the only real way to go. MP3 is okay, but still a compromise.
Hey Sony: not bad...but how can you leave out such a huge feature as deleting on the fly?
[Edit: 12/30/09. I now have to give this little thang a little more than four stars...and hooray to Amazoon's code writers: we can now finally change our ratings after the original review. I returned my original to the mallwart (so nice of them to let us try stuff out! And so unfortunate they can't pay living wages so I might feel bad about costing them restocking fees...), but after looking around for a few weeks I realized this Sony unit offers far more bang for the buck than any other mp3 player out there. So I picked one up here, saving twenty over the mallwart price, and am very happy with it, barring the above caveats.
The best way to deal with no delete feature seems to be to mark the tracks you don't dig with the "wishlist" feature on the options screen, and then when you charge the unit you can open the files and delete tunes you've wishlisted. Much more hassle than deleting on the fly, but at least a workable solution to my main negative about the product.
If Sony releases a firmware update that lets us delete on the fly (not sure if that's possible or not; hope so), then I'd have to give this thing an almost perfect rating.
Pair it with Koss Portapros and you will be blown away by the sound.]
[Edit: 5/12/10. Still working fine after plenty of use while running, hiking, and hooked up to the car stereo. Zero complaints.
And here's a tip I learned from a battery expert: these lithium units apparently prefer to be full all the time, and seeing as they don't have "memory effect" like normal batteries, it's safe to recharge this unit as often as you like, with no resultant loss of memory over the long haul. But supposedly lithiums also work best and last longest if one lets them drain completely once every 30 recharges or so, and then fully fills them up again. I don't know enough about batteries to confirm or deny (though I've been doing it that way and my walkman is still running a long time before needing juice), but it was a very detailed, well-written discussion by someone with a lot of experience in the field, who wasn't selling anything, and that's the kind of opinion I tend to trust. Just FYI.]
[Edit: 1/12/11. Seeing as this review is being read a lot, thought I'd mention battery life stats after 14 months' steady usage, about a thousand hours or so. I fully charged it and left it running on shuffle last week to see how the batt's doing, and it gave me 12 hours straight. Not bad at all considering most players don't give a dozen hours out of the box. When I scroll etc in between albums, I get about ten hours now, still very satisfactory.
And I guess I got lucky, because my Walkman has yet to break down in any way. The occasional freeze is instantly fixed by turning it off and then on again.

Acoustic Research HDP100 HD Powerlink Audio/Video Transmission System (Black) Review

Acoustic Research HDP100 HD Powerlink Audio/Video Transmission System (Black)

Like all powerline products, how well it works depends on the wiring in your house. I have both boxes (transmit and receive) on the same circuit, going from the front of my living room to the projector in the back. Picture quality is great and looks the same as with a long HDMI cable. I have measured it pushing nearly 50 Mbps of Blu-ray data with no trouble.
I use a projector, so I cannot speak to how well it passes audio through. I have also not tried the IR pass-through.
There are a couple of downsides. The boxes run pretty hot, even staying warm when on but not in use. Each box has its own power switch. I have mounted the boxes in locations not convenient for turning on and off (switch only, no IR) and it bugs me that the standby state runs warm, sucking down electricity 24/7. Also, AR/Audiovox customer service is lacking, as they were no help with seeking stand screws that were supposed to be included, but were left out of the box. Their response: "Our apologies but we don't carry parts as we only do basic troubleshooting and in-warranty exchanges for the whole unit. But you can visit our major dealers that carry our line of products....and check if they have the part you're looking for. Also check other electronic shops/stores within your area that carry suitable replacement parts that may fit your unit."

XtremeMac IPV-LTP6-6001 Iconz for iPod (video 60)- Speedracer Review

XtremeMac IPV-LTP6-6001 Iconz for iPod (video 60)- Speedracer

The Speed Racer iPod cover/jacket is very colorful and the animated characters look great. It is well made and a HUGE bargain compared to other iPod covers. It doesn't quite fit as snugly around my 30GB iPod as I would like, but maybe that's a little picky. It certainly does do its job of protecting the iPod from scratches, dings, etc. Well worth the money.
