I just received this wireless controller after looking around for a good device wich let me shoot my D300 remotely. I upgraded from a D80, which I used with the small, practical and cheap ML-L3 remote control. I love my D300, buy I was disappointed when I realized that my nice ML-L3 will not make it with my new toy. So I started looking for something that could work with it, and found this strange device.
My first impression was not very good. The material could be much better; it looks cheap (even when it's not exactly cheap) and the finish quality is not so good. It has 4 on/off switches on both transmitter and receiver to set 1 of 16 possible frequencies; that's not too much but I guess that is more than enough. I expected this equipment be shipped with batteries, but I found that there were not included, so I opened the batteries hatch on the transmitter and found that I needed some batteries I didn't have. It uses 2 AAA batteries, no problem, but it also requires a 12 volts A24 battery (the kind used in some automatic garage transmitters). Then I went to the receiver and found that it needs a third kind of battery: a small 6 volts battery that does not even have a size or model name. After visitting RadioShack, I had all 3 battery kinds I needed.
Then, I properly installed the batteries and discovered that the transmitter turned on immediately. I looked for a power switch being unable to find it: the poorly written 1-sheet manual confirmed me that indeed, there is no power switch, meaning that the transmitter will be always on. The receiver has a button that let me turn it on and off with no problem, but this button is so exposed that it can easily be turned on accidentally and drain the battery.
Later on, I began to play with some of the functions. I got happier then when I found that this equipment could do several things I wanted. The distance range seems to be excellent: the receiver got signal 100m away from the transmitter. The transmitter can be set up to make as many sequential shots as you want, having a parameter to set the frequency and the duration of these shoots. If the only thing you want is to take a picture remotely, it gets as easy as pressing the shutter button on the remote. This button doesn't feel as well as I could expected, but I will get used to it's quality and guess I can live with that. The button works as the camera shutter button: there is a half press and a full press that gives more control than the binary ML-L3 style.
The transmitter is huge if compared to the tiny ML-L3, but it quickly found a place among my equipment. However, being larger makes it fit better in my hand.
Now I'm a little concerned about running out of batteries while traveling. AAA are not a problem, but the other two might be hard to get far away from home.
***Pros***
-Good range (much more than I need)
-Doesn't need direct view between transmitter and receiver since it works with RF instead of IR
-Several functions
-Has a screen that makes it easier to use
-Works with D300 (among others). I wish Nikon had something of it's own brand
-It doesn't have to be imported from China (already done by someone else)
***Cons***
-Quality should be improved
-Shutter button feedback is not so nice
-It uses 3 kinds of batteries!!!!
-Doesn't have a power button
-Pricey
-Manual is not very explicative
***Bottom line***
I think I made a good choice purchasing this item. Sure, I coud be much better, but at least makes what is supposed to do. I would recommend it considering that there are not too many options out there. I'm happy with it, but definitely not impressed.
